Technology blog Gizmodo claims to have unearthed the next version of the iPhone. It was found in a bar in Redwood City, California, just 20 minutes from Apple’s infinite Loop headquarters. According to the Gizmodo story, the device, disguised as an iPhone 3GS, was left in the Gourmet Haus Staudt bar by one Gray Powell, a software engineer at Apple working on the iPhone Baseband software that enables the device to make voice calls. Powell has been using the device to update his Facebook status from the bar.
The person who found the phone, having twigged eventually that it wasn’t a normal iPhone, tried to find out more from Apple, and when he was unable to do so, turned to Gizmodo instead, much to the blog’s delight. Its story contains numerous videos and close-up photos of the device, which has a flat, rather than rounded, back panel, and also features a front-facing video chat camera, a rear camera with a larger lens than the current version, and a flash. (That’s a flash, as opposed to Flash.) The device also weighs 3g more than the iPhone 3GS, and has a battery that is 16% larger than the current version.
While some of the comments filed by Gizmodo readers question whether the whole thing was a deliberate stunt set up by Apple, with some also suspecting Gizmodo’s complicit involvement, the blog itself seemed convinced the lost phone was genuine when it posted the story yesterday, even more so when it received a letter from Apple Senior Vice President and General Counsel Bruce Sewell, asking for the device back.
Whether it is for real, or some kind of promotional stunt on Apple’s behalf, with the story so far retweeted 28,938 times, Gizmodo won’t be complaining either way.
